Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to look stunning based on recent gameplay reveals, but console players should prepare for a locked 30 frames per second experience at launch. According to reports, Rockstar Games is currently running the title at 30FPS on PlayStation 5 hardware during development and has not committed to a higher frame-rate performance mode.
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-director at Rockstar North, shared the update with content creators who visited the studio for an early look at the game. He confirmed that, at this stage of development, GTA 6 runs at 30 frames per second on consoles.
When asked about a potential 60FPS option, Nelson said the team still needs to consult with the technical staff. He could not commit to whether a higher frame-rate mode would arrive at launch or be added later via patch. Details on target resolution and other technical features, including ray tracing, also remain unconfirmed at this time. The information first surfaced through Brazilian outlet Flow Games and was further discussed by YouTuber Davy Jones, one of the creators who saw the game in person. Kotaku reported the comments after the latest extended gameplay showcase, which was captured on a base PlayStation 5 and looked highly impressive even at the lower frame rate.
Consistent With Rockstar’s Past Approach
A 30FPS launch target aligns with how Rockstar has handled previous open-world titles. Grand Theft Auto V did not receive an official 60FPS option until the next-generation upgrades arrived for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Red Dead Redemption 2 still lacks an official 60FPS patch on modern consoles years after release.
This prioritization of visual fidelity, dense simulation, and stable performance over higher frame rates has long been Rockstar’s hallmark. GTA 6 continues that tradition, at least for the initial console versions.
What About PS5 Pro and Future Hardware?
It remains unclear whether the PlayStation 5 Pro will unlock additional options such as a 40FPS mode for 120Hz displays. Even if a full 60FPS performance mode stays off the table at launch, later patches or next-generation consoles (including the expected PlayStation 6 and Xbox successor) could change the picture.
PC players will not face the same restriction. The PC version of GTA 6 has not been announced and is expected to arrive later — historically, GTA V took nearly 18 months to reach Steam after its console debut. When it does arrive, the PC port should support unlocked frame rates and higher settings.
Why 30FPS Still Works for GTA 6
The recent gameplay footage demonstrated that Rockstar’s focus on dense environments, advanced AI, weather systems, and detailed character models delivers a highly immersive experience even at 30FPS. Many players who saw the footage noted how much more advanced the game already appears compared with GTA V. A stable 30FPS target also helps ensure the massive open world of Vice City and beyond runs consistently across base PS5 and Xbox Series consoles without major compromises to the simulation depth Rockstar is known for.
Rockstar has left the door open for changes. Nelson’s comments make clear that a 60FPS performance mode is still under technical evaluation and could potentially arrive post-launch. Until then, GTA 6 is on track to launch as a 30FPS experience on consoles, prioritizing the richest possible version of the world Rockstar is building.
Fans will be watching closely for any further technical details as the game moves closer to release. For now, the message is clear: expect 30 frames per second at launch, with the possibility of higher performance options still under review.
